The Centre for Advanced Learning is excited to bring you the Biochemistry Foundations for Dietitians Evergreen course. 

Audience: Dietitians with 1-3 years of experience in practice. This course can also be useful as a refresher if you are returning to practice in this area. 

Course learning objectives: 

  • Explain what happens to the principal nutrients in food once consumed 
  • Describe the main pathways involved in energy metabolism and the shift in metabolism observed with feasting and fasting
  • Discuss the role of biochemical tests in nutrition assessment and be able to recognise common diagnostic tests used in Australia 
  • Explain the impact of various dietary patterns on biochemical and metabolic parameters 
  • Use biochemical tests (along with other relevant information), to inform and provide evidence-based and practical nutrition education and advice 

Access to the course: New registrants will be uploaded to the Learning Management System (LMS) within 1 week of registering online. Once you have been uploaded to the LMS, you will have ongoing access for 12 months to the course and associated materials. 

CPD hours: This course is worth 14 CPD hours collectively. You will need to manually enter your CPD hours for this course. 

Certificates: Upon completing of the course, you will be able to download your certificate from the LMS. 

Course overview

This Evergreen course consists of 1 module and 3 toolkits. We have redesigned our course structure to provide you more flexibility in your registration options. 

For this course, you can choose to register for the whole course at once, OR you can choose to register for the individual module or toolkit(s) that are relevant to you. 

Each module is outlined in detail below. 

Module 1: Fundamental concepts of human biochemistry

This module is individually worth 5 CPD hours.

Module 1 learning outcomes:

  • Describe the process of digestion and absorption of the principal nutrients from food 
  • Explain the fate of energy-yielding nutrients in energy metabolism
  • Discuss energy balance, including feasting and fasting, and the impact of alcohol on metabolism 
  • Explain the role of biochemical tests in nutrition assessment 

Toolkit 1: Understanding and interpreting biochemical test results

This toolkit is individually worth 2 CPD hours.

Toolkit 1 learning outcomes:

  • Describe the role of biochemical testing in nutrition assessment, and explore common diagnostic tests undertaken in Australia
  • Explain the use and interpretation of reference intervals (ranges) and what these mean
  • Locate up-to-date, evidence-based information on Australian clinical biochemical and laboratory tests

Toolkit 2: Dietary patterns and impact on biochemical parameters (part 1)

This toolkit is individually worth 2 CPD hours.

Toolkit 2 learning outcomes:

  • Identify health dietary patterns and recognise the relationship between dietary patterns, foods, and nutrients
  • Discuss the effect of dietary patterns on biochemical parameters and health 
  • Confidently interpret test results, in context with dietary patterns and other available information, to provide practical nutrition advice and education 

Toolkit 3: Dietary patterns and impact on biochemical parameters (part 2)

This toolkit is individually worth 2 CPD hours.

Toolkit 3 learning outcomes:

  • Discuss the effect of health dietary patterns on biochemical parameters and health 
  • Explain the impact of these on non-communicable disease (NCD) 
  • Confidently interpret test results, in context with dietary patterns and other available information, to provide practical nutrition advice and education

Meet the educator

Helen Morris 

Helen is an accredited practising dietitian with over 35 years’ experience covering clinical nutrition and dietetics across the life stages (neonatal to geriatrics), community and public health, food service and tertiary education. Helen began teaching at the University of Adelaide in 2008, working on the development, delivery and coordination of the nutrition component for the Bachelor of Food and Nutrition Science. From 2017 to 2021, Helen was the Program Coordinator for this degree and was responsible for the initiation and development of curriculum content, leadership in the establishment of potential external student research partnerships, and improved teaching facilities, including a new innovative teaching kitchen. She has been the subject matter expert for several online courses. 

Helen has received a number of awards/honours for her teaching work, including an OAM in 2012 for consultative work undertaken with the South Australian Education Department and her contribution to the development and implementation of the South Australian healthy food and drink supply policy for schools and pre-schools, in particular the development and delivery of training workshops and resources. She is a member of the University of Adelaide’s Education Academy.

Who is this course for? 

Dietitians with 1-3 years' experience in practice. 

This course can be useful for new graduate dietitians, or for more experienced dietitians who are new to this area or would like a refresher before returning to practice within this area after some time away. 

How long will I have access to the course?

Do I need to complete the course in any order?

This course is self-paced, which means you can do as little or as much as you like at any given time. It is recommended that you start at the first module and then progress through to the last, as each module will build on knowledge from the previous modules. 

How do I access the course?

Once you have registered for the course it takes up to a week to be uploaded to the Learning Management System (LMS). If you have previously enrolled in a Centre for Advanced Learning course, you can locate this course under the 'My Courses' tab once you have logged into the LMS. If you are a new user, you will receive an automated email from the LMS informing you of your enrolment and password within a week of registering. This automated email will go to the same email address that you registered to the course with, be sure to check your junk inbox if you have not received it.

How long will it take me to complete the course? 

Since this course is self-paced, the number of hours will vary from participant to participant, however it is expected that this course in its entirety will take approximately 14 hours to complete. You will need to manually upload your CPD hours for this course.
